Sprint-Based Testing for SumUp’s Field Sales App

  • Discovery Research
  • Usability Testing

To unblock and scale SumUp’s ambitious sales goals, we helped them develop a custom mobile app for their field sales agents. Quick, iterative product validation cycles enabled the whole team to start fast and maintain a high development velocity.

Schedule Meeting

SumUp, a leading global fintech company, launched the Sidekick App to support field sales representatives with mobile access to sales, payouts, and inventory. The app aimed to speed up onboarding, reduce support needs and fit seamlessly into daily work.

To tackle this, we embraced a model of continuous product discovery. Testing ideas early, validating assumptions with real field sales representatives, and iterating rapidly before launch. Working in sprint-based cycles allowed us to fine-tune features based on direct feedback, ensuring that what went into development was exactly what the user wanted.

Objective & Solution

The project faced a dual mandate: ship a usable product quickly while streamlining and improving the sales efforts of the users. Sidekick needed to deliver immediate value to field sales representatives without any hiccups.

To tackle this, we embraced Theresa Torres’s model of Continuous Testing. To ensure the app met both merchant and field sales the UX Research team conducted a series of:

  • Rapid prototyping
  • Usability testing
  • Iterative refinement prior to rollout

The goals of this process were to:

  • Identify usability barriers
  • Validate product–market fit
  • Refine the interface for diverse user groups

Project Outcomes Link to this headline

  • Streamlined Processes

Sidekick simplified work by centralising tasks from different platforms, often only available on desktop and consolidated into one easy-to-use mobile app.

  • Commissions Transparency

Sidekick made commissions instantly visible, replacing manual calculations and manager approvals with a transparent, effortless process.

  • Inventory Management

Sidekick let field sales representatives track inventory and request stock, while giving the business clear oversight of inventory that requires replenishment.

Testimonial

Working with an external agency that not only provided design, engineering but also user research. To me that was incredible because usually you just get someone who builds whatever you tell them to do, and they don't actually become part of the project. Which I think you do very differently.

Project Deliverables Link to this headline

The following are some of the deliverables that were created for this project.

  1. Deliverable

    Usability Testing

    User Experience

Showing prototypes to field sales representatives and gaining feedback on usability and and seeing what works and what doesn't

    Evolution of User Journeys

    Product Strategy

Through continuous testing the user journey was able to evolve and change according to the needs of the user as well as the business, Sumup. New features were built upon a steady foundation and the user flows evolved accordingly
